Windfall (2026)
3D High Order Ambisonics
Windfall began as a companion piece to Dido, a theater work loosely drawn from Marlowe's play of the same name. Conceived to play as audiences gathered before the performance, it was set aside when the production took a different direction. The piece has since been developed as an independent concert work.
The dramatic situation is Aeneas inside the hull of his ship, approaching Carthage. Cut off from any visible horizon, what reaches him — and us — comes only through wood and water. The sound world of the piece is at first almost entirely interior: low, pressurized, uncertain. The hull absorbs and distorts everything outside it.
Over seven and a half minutes, that boundary erodes. Frequencies sharpen, textures become exposed. The outside world presses in — wind, chains, stone — until the piece ends in the disorder of landfall.
